This adorable Bobble Bag is the perfect bag for using day to day or for special occasions and events. The yarn it is made with is bright and beautiful, while the bag itself is covered in bobbles with short straps and tonnes of attitude.
Description:
If you follow me on Instagram you will probably be aware of my great love for the bobble stitch. I adore making things that incorporate this stitch, either as part of the pattern like with this bag or making it the only feature of the pattern.
I also love Aran yarn, and yarn with wee multi coloured speckles is the best, and the cutest.
This bag brings together all of these loves in one awesome project. One side of the bag features the bobble stitch while the other side is plain, although you can easily make it all bobble if you prefer.
The bag is made flat, in one piece and then the two sides are stitched together along the two sides. Then the handles are stitched onto the bag.
The finished bag measures 26cm/10in in length and 22cm/8.5in in width. There are two handles, and each one measures 65cm/26in in length and 4cm/1.5in in width.
The chains (ch) at the beginning of each row do not count as stitches unless stated.
Difficulty Level and Notes:
This bag pattern is for intermediate crocheters.
This cute bag is cuteness personified. It is fairly simple to crochet up but you will need to know how to do the half treble - half double in American terms.
You will also need to know how to make the bobble stitch.
If you aren't familiar with these stitches I have written up a quick guide in this pattern. Or there are some great videos on YouTube.
Please note that I am using UK terms throughout the pattern, but the US term will be in the glossary.
If you would like a pdf of The Bobble Bag pattern, or prefer a pattern written with US terms you can purchase a pdf via my website, Ravelry, Love Crafts or Etsy stores. You will receive two copies - one with US terms and the other with UK terms.
To Make This Bag You Will Need:
- 1 x 100g / 1.75-2.25yards / 236m-258m of Aran/Worsted Weight yarn #4 yarn - I used Sirdar Supersoft Aran Rainbow Drops yarn - Pick & Mix (shade 0861) 100% acrylic yarn. I used the entire ball of yarn on this project so I would recommend getting a second ball just to be sure
- 5mm/H-8 crochet hook
- scissors
- darning needle to weave in the ends
Tension Square:
Not important for this project

Glossary:
dc = double crochet (UK) - in the USA this is the single crochet stitch (sc)
htr = half treble (UK) - in the USA this is the half double crochet stitch (hdc)
bob = bobble stitch
ch = chain
Stitches Explained:
Half Treble (htr) - UK / Half Double (hdc) - USA
Yarn around hook - put hook through stitch - grab yarn - pull through - you will now have three loops on your hook - grab yarn and pull through all three loops
Bobble Stitch (bob)
Place one tr (US-dc) into the first stitch - keep the two loops on the hook - make another tr/dc into the same stitch - you will now have three loops on your hook - repeat until you have done four tr/dc - you will now have five loops on your hook - grab the yarn and pull through all five loops.
Now return to the pattern - dc (US-sc) into the next st. This makes the bobble stitch really pop out.
Let The Crocheting Begin:
Front of the Bag:-
Chain 30
Row 1: htr into the 2nd ch from the hook, htr into the next st, repeat to the end of the row
Row 2: ch2, turn, htr into the 1st st, htr into the next st, repeat to the end of the row
Row 3: ch2, turn, bob in the 1st st, dc in the next st, repeat these 2 sts to the last st of the row, dc
Row 4: ch1, turn, dc in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Row 5: ch2, turn, htr in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Row 6: ch2, turn, htr in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Row 7: ch2, turn, bob in the 1st st, dc in the next st, repeat these two sts to the last st of the row, dc
Row 8: ch1, turn, dc in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Row 9: ch2, turn, htr in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Row 10: ch2, turn, htr in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Repeat Rows 7 to 10 five more times (you will have seven bobble (bob) pattern repeats by the end
Do not cut yarn.
Back of the Bag:
(If you want the bag to be all bobble just continue to repeat Rows 7 to 10)
Row 31: ch2, turn, htr in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Rows 32 to 54: Repeat Row 31
Fasten Off
Handles (make two):
Chain 7
Row 1: htr in the 2nd ch from the hook, repeat to the end of the row
Row 2: ch2, turn, htr in the 1st st, repeat to the end of the row
Repeat Row 2 until work measures 70cm/28in in length, or whatever length you fancy
Fasten Off
Stitching Together:
Fold the bag in half on the wrong side (the bobbles will be on the inside).
Stitch up the two sides of the bag.
Place the first handle a couple of inches below the top of the bag and half an inch in from the edge. Stitch around the strap. I use stitch markers around the stitch area to make sure it stays in place.
Continue this on the remaining three strap ends.
Well done, you have just completed a cute wee Bobble bag. I hope you enjoyed making it as much as I did.
